and can be obtained only from on-highway field testing with an instrumented
truck. Detailed field data are also required for the validation and refinement of
simulation codes. Sponsorship, with significant industry cost-sharing, of a
concept/demonstration truck is strongly recommended.
An initial five-year program plan, with total DOE/OHVT funding of approximately
$23 million, is proposed in Table 1. It is expected that DOE/OHVT funding will be leveraged by
industrial cost-sharing.
While the emphasis of the workshop, and of this workshop report and multiyear program plan, is
on on-highway, heavy-duty (Class 7-8) trucks, the proposed multiyear research plan should be
generally applicable to the bus, off-highway, and rail segments of the heavy-vehicle industry as
well.
